Kandura & Abaya Care in Al Khawaneej & Al Mizhar

A kandura shows every shortcut. Most have been polyester since the nineties, chosen for the sheen on the cloth, so our job is to protect that sheen rather than press it flat. We press the neckband from the underside first. The tarboosha never meets the iron.

What's included

What we actually do

  • The tarboosha is coiled, tied end to end and tucked into the breast pocket before anything goes near water, the way it is done at home, so it cannot tangle in the drum
  • It is steamed from a distance afterwards. An iron laid on it flattens the braid
  • The neckband and cuffs are pressed from the underside first, then the face, so nothing glazes
  • Whites are lifted with oxygen and enzymes. Chlorine sets perspiration yellowing into the fibre instead of taking it out
  • Small loads. An overloaded drum is what turns a white kandura grey, because the soil has nowhere to go but back into the cloth
  • No fabric softener. It is what puts the static into a kandura, and it softens a garment meant to hold its own body
  • Starch if you ask for it, though on polyester the body comes from being pressed damp rather than from the starch, and repeated starch leaves a residue that dulls the sheen
  • Abayas go into solvent where the crepe or the nida asks for it, which keeps the black from washing out over a year of Fridays
  • Beadwork and stonework are set aside and finished by hand. It is the edge of the drum that chips stones loose
  • Abayas are pressed inside out through a cotton cloth. Ghutra and shayla are pressed separately
  • Air-dried in shade where the fabric asks for it. Strong sun fades the cloth and makes it brittle
  • Returned on hangers and covered, never folded

Common questions

Do you collect for kandura and abaya care from my home?

Yes. Free pickup and delivery across Al Khawaneej, Al Khawaneej 2, Al Mizhar, Al Mizhar 3, Muhaisnah 1, Al Ttay and Oud Al Muteena. Pick a day on the booking form and we call you to agree a time.

How long does it take?

Standard turnaround is 24 hours: collected today, back tomorrow. Express pressing in 45 minutes is a walk-in service at our Al Khawaneej 2 counter, on selected items.

What if something is not right?

Tell us and we collect it, put it right and bring it back. There is a counter and a person behind it in Al Khawaneej 2, so nothing has to be argued through an app.

What do you do with the tarboosha?

We coil it, tie the end to the start and tuck it into the breast pocket before the kandura goes in, which is what people do at home and for the same reason: loose in a drum it tangles and does not come back. Afterwards it is steamed from a distance. We do not lay an iron on it.

Can I ask for starch?

Yes, and we will do it exactly as you ask. It is worth knowing what it does, though. Most kanduras are polyester now, and starch is made to bond with cotton, so on polyester it sits on the surface rather than in the fibre. The crispness you want comes mostly from being pressed while damp. Ask for it if you like the feel, and tell us if you would rather we left it off.

My abaya has stones on it. Can you still take it?

Yes. Point them out when the driver takes it, or say so on the phone when we call. Stoned and beaded pieces are kept out of the machine and finished by hand, because it is the edge of the drum that knocks stones off, not the water.
